About Reserva Natural das Ilhéus das Cabras

The Reserva Natural das Ilhéus das Cabras is a protected natural reserve centered on two rocky islets located approximately 1.5 kilometers north of Terceira Island in the Azores archipelago, Portugal. These islets, known as the Ilhéu Grande and Ilhéu Pequeno, are volcanic in origin and cover a total area of around 12 hectares. The reserve was established to preserve the fragile marine and coastal ecosystem as well as the breeding grounds of various seabird species and marine fauna. The islands are characterized by steep cliffs, basalt rock formations, and surrounding nutrient-rich waters that support diverse marine life, including fish, crustaceans, and endemic algae species. Education and low-impact wildlife observation are the main visitor draws, as the islets are uninhabited and access is limited to guided boat tours to prevent ecological damage. Snorkeling and diving in the nearby waters reveal vibrant underwater gardens and abundant marine species. The reserve also plays an important conservation role as a nesting site for seabirds such as Cory’s shearwater and Bulwer's petrel. Hiking enthusiasts enjoy coastal trails along Terceira’s northern shore with views toward the islets, combining scenic volcanic landscapes with marine vistas. The Reserva Natural das Ilhéus das Cabras exemplifies Azores’ commitment to preserving unique island and ocean ecosystems while providing meaningful nature experiences for visitors who appreciate marine biodiversity, birdwatching, and remote natural settings.
